You ve spent millions of dollars on training, and what do you have to show for it? Training programs are the first to be cut during lean times, and I m not here to argue that they shouldn t. Most training programs lack sufficient evaluation and have an inconsequential impact on the bottom line. In the 90s, training went from a perk to an entitlement. Employees expect to be continually educated without being held responsible to apply information in a manner that creates profit. What s worse is that many employees leave after you ve educated them. Why should you continue to educate your competition’s workforce?

Golf fans can finally get excited because the Masters has arrived. This is the first, and arguably the best, Major Championship of the year so if you are a fan of golf and can t get excited for the weekend, there has to be something wrong. The Masters tournament is the only Major Championship played on the same course annually. The real golf fans could walk you through each hole on the course. They may add a little length each season with the new golf equipment and quality of players, but other than that factor everything remains the same. The winner gets the Green Jacket which is the most prestigious award that golf has to offer.

Brad Faxon carded a 9-under par 61 in the final round to force and win a playoff with Tjaart Van Der Walt at the 2005 edition of the Buick Championship. Many times in this column, “1-iron” has paid respectful homage to Faxon for his loyalty to the history, tradition and rules of the game of golf. Faxon is a great ambassador for the game, and is someone who is not afraid to speak his mind about controversial issues. This column wants to congratulate Brad Faxon on a job well done in Hartford.
